The Cruisers Book 1 Walter Dean Myers Books
In the book, The Cruisers, Book 1, Alexander (aka Zander) and his group of friends known as The Cruisers, write a newspaper article titled “Life on the high C’s” arguing against what Mr. Culpepper, the assistant principal, believes in - getting A’s and B’s. The Cruisers believe that C’s are just as fine as A’s and B’s. Mr. Culpepper gets mad and he almost kicks The Cruisers out of Da Vinci Academy, a school for the gifted and talented in Harlem, New York City. But, Mr. Culpepper says to The Cruisers that if they want to stay at Da Vinci Academy, they have to redeem themselves. In history the eighth grade starts studying the Civil War and the teacher breaks the eighth grade into groups representing the North and South but The Cruisers have to redeem themselves by being the peacekeepers to stop the mock Civil War from ever happening. The Cruisers are made up of four eighth grade kids - Zander, Kambui, Bobbi, and LaShonda. They all don’t have good grades but are always looking out for each other.
Zander, the leader of The Cruisers, loves Language Arts and PE and wants to write screenplays when he grows up. Also, he likes Da Vinci Academy because there aren’t a lot of fights. Kambui is Zanders best friend and loves photography. His dad is in jail but he lives with his grandmother, and he never backs down from a fight. Bobbi has a very big passion for math, and has A’s in math but in everything else she has C’s and D’s.LaShonda loves fashion design. She lives in a group home with her brother in The Bronx since her parents abandoned them.
‘Sons of the Confederacy’ (which is the name for the group representing the South) is made up of Alvin and all of the other players on their soccer team, with Alvin as their leader. Alvin writes the school newspapers and plays goalie on the Da Vinci soccer team.
In this book, the two main conflicts are between The Sons of the Confederacy and The Cruisers.
The first conflict is when Alvin writes a newspaper article about civilizing black people. He believes that the white people should help the black people to be civilized by teaching them their religion and ways of life. The Cruisers call a meeting with Alvin and the Sons of the Confederacy to say what they believe - that black people don’t need anyone’s help to be civilized. The next day he wrote a newspaper article arguing with The Sons of the Confederacy about civilizing black people.
The last conflict was towards the end of the book, when The Cruisers made signs that all of the black kids in school are going wear to school the next day saying “I Have Been Degraded”. Zander’s plan is that they are going to wear the signs and treat the white kids like their feelings don’t matter because Alvin said that black people’s feelings don’t matter since black people aren’t civilized. Zander is doing this to show the white kids what it feels like when your feelings don’t matter.
This book is the first of the four books of the Cruisers series, and is recommended for kids in grades 6-8. I agree with that but I would study the Civil War before reading this book to understand it better.

The Cruisers Book 1 Walter Dean Myers Books Reviews
I did.
A AWESOME BOOK READ IT IN TWO DAYS AND CAN'T WAIT FOR MORE OF THE CRUISERS !_! I RECOMMEND IT
the book was easy reader for my grandson and he enjoy it, nothing I had to force him read, it was for a school project
my son read this book as part of his summer reading. He liked it. VERY easy read. A bit too easy.
I really enjoyed the plot of this book. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. A recommended read.
In the book, “The Cruisers”, the main character Zander and his group that contains LaShonda, Kambui, and Bobbi. They get a class assignment that has them write a news article that goes against what the assistant principal Mr. Culpepper wants. Which is the best grades all the time. But, Zander and his group called the, “The Cruisers”, believe that C’s are ok. This group doesn’t have the best background with their grades and their actions. So, eventually Mr. Culpepper gets fed up with with them and scares them by telling them that he will kick them out of Da Vinci Academy if they keep doing what they're doing.
In this book there is always some kind of conflict going on. For example, “The Cruisers” and another group of kids had a conflict because, the other group of kids believed that the black people deserved to be treated as non equals. This conflict went on for basically the whole book. To solve that conflict, Zander had a idea to wear signs around their necks that said “I HAVE BEEN DEGRADED.”
Another conflict that went on while reading the book was with, “The Cruisers”, and Mr.Culpepper. Because of them thinking that C’s are just as good as A’s. Also, them not being the best of students wasn’t to great. Mr. Culpepper had to warn/scare them by telling them, that if they keep up what they are doing then they will be expelled, if they didn’t do well on the project. Since Mr. Culpepper said that, which lead it to the other conflict, didn’t make Mr. Culpepper to satisfied.
I think that the book was great. I liked the way that they had the characters not being the students that follow the rules. Also, having them always wanting to get into fights. While them also having to do a very difficult school project, which could cause them there education. Those are the reasons that I think this book is definitely on my top 10 best books.
