Elemental The Light Bringer Saga Volume 1 Brandon Ax 9781484147917 Books

Elemental is a Young Adult fantasy novel. I've never been into fantasy or science fiction-y things, but I enjoyed Elemental tremendously.

The heroine of Elemental is Sophia, a high school student who lives alone with her father. Every night, her sleep is disturbed by strange dreams. Then Sophia meets an unusual young man named Aiden, and she begins to learn more about who – and what – she really is.

Sophia tells her own story; therefore, Brandon Ax's voice in the novel is that of a teen-aged girl. Not once did I question that the main character is a young girl. Brandon never takes a wrong step and slips into guy speech, but I must say I like it that Sophia isn't over-the-top feminine. She has to deal with more than mere teen angst, and she remains pretty darn strong. She takes a lot in stride, after an initial shock or surprise.

Here, Sophia greets her best friend, Jen, at school:

She walked up to me smiling. "Sup sexy lady."

Not much Miss beautamuss." I smiled back.

Sounds like a couple of girls in high school, right?

A lot happens, but I could follow the story.

This book is cool and interesting:

The shadows came, they stood in a semi-circle in front of me. I knew what they wanted, they wanted to take me. I knew because they had been searching for me in my dreams so many nights since I was a child. I could never make out anyone, just faceless bodies shrouded in darkness.

Elemental earns The Janie Junebug Highest Seal of Approval. I wish I had a prize I could give you for successfully completing your first novel. I understand that the second book in this series, "The Light Bringer Saga," is also available.

Elemental The Light Bringer Saga Volume 1 Brandon Ax 9781484147917 Books Reviews

I found reading this to be a great ride. It starts out following a character that is somewhat refreshing for the YA world and ends up taking you down the rabbit hole. Everyday life is paired with the darkness of nightmares and the reality of a real danger lurking in the shadows. There is some romance in the book, but it didn't overwhelm the story, which to me is about a girl with abandonment issues who finds herself in the center of world gone mad. The book has loss and death and love and danger. There are moments of action that feel very well paced and then moments of contemplation that give a good insight to Sophia's mind. I really enjoyed it and read it quickly, not because it was short, but because I had trouble putting it down.
I wish I could say I am an avid reader; however if I spread that rumor I would be amiss. Most books cannot keep my attention; I try but fail to retain what I read in most cases. I have a wondering mind, but this book; this book I carried around with me reading at every free moment. At one moment on the edge of my seat and then the next sitting back in my chair very happy at different turns. I am trying to patiently wait for his next book to be out. I recommend this read!
Great story and very well thought out execution. The only complaint I have is that I would have liked to see more of a show of power from Sophia, she did seem to do a lot of being the damsel in distress.
UPDATE (MAY 2017) I have revised my original review of this after rereading Elemental because my original review mentioned editing issues, and the author has since had the book edited. Because the book was so incredibly good, I wanted to reread the edited version before continuing with the series, now that I have more time to read for pleasure, and I believe it's only proper that the review should reflect the book's current state.

Elemental is an exciting debut novel written by the obviously talented Brandon Ax. The characters were nicely developed and the descriptions of the action were vivid enough that I could picture it all clearly. A well-done balance on the good-v-evil thing. The "good" guys have their faults, and the "bad" guys are still interesting without being over-the-top unbelievable. The plot had depth and unpredictability that kept me on edge.

My original review removed a star due to editing issues, and I'm happy to add that star back after rereading it, post-edits. The book really is that good. Mr. Ax has taken his talent and polished it to put forth a quality piece of work.

His storytelling is exceptional, and not only am I glad I reread it, but I'm looking forward to delving into the second book in the Light Bringer series. I'm going to enjoy recommending this book to friends.
I love the story since the begining. At first, it was a bit slow, but suddendly I got wrapped up in the story and now I can't wait to get the next book. Totally recommended for those who like characters what suddenly develop special powers. Also, the love going on between them and the family/friend relationship is great.
This was a different concept for me and I enjoyed reading it; it has me wanting to read the next which is a good sign. I was a little frustrated with how easily she seemed to give in to the "Dr" who all of a sudden made her feel everything wasn't real but hey, she did find her way out of it! I would like to leave a little more detail but I'm afraid my reviews are left during breaks at work )
Eighteen-year-old Sophia, has been living with nightmares - shadow creatures and demons - ever since her mother's death. Sophia thinks she must be insane. Then she meets a mysterious young man named Aiden who claims to be an Elemental with special powers to fight these demons. Is she really crazy? Or are these dark creatures part of a reality where she and the ones she loves are in grave danger? You'll have to read the story to find out.

Elemental is an urban fantasy with very strong characters and a compelling plot. There are plenty of twists and turns along the way to keep the reader guessing about what is going to happen next. The voice of the protagonist, Sophia, is particularly well-done. She is a believable character and the journey through her mind with all the thoughts, feelings, and reactions, makes her seem very real.

Readers who enjoy YA urban fantasies will certainly want to take a look at this book.
