This is a fascinating portrayal of a burgeoning relationship of James Dean and Pier Angeli. I came into this with little to no real knowledge of either of the actors private lives, so found it all refreshing and very interesting. I don’t know how much is fact or fiction but I certainly enjoyed it nevertheless. This isn’t a soft focus novel making light of real issues and fluffing up the romance. Some of what happens in their lives at the time is far from fun and frolics, but perhaps because of the up and down nature of such public lives under scrutiny it makes the romance all that more valuable to them, and as a result, more entertaining now for us readers.

The book was very interesting. I read it in less than two days. Being from Indiana, I am interested in James Dean. Ted Guevara gave a very inciteful perspective of this aspect of James Dean's private life.
Ted Guevara's novel Lips of a Mastodon about James Dean's short love affair with actress Pier Angeli was as much an insight to the iconic actor's character as it is a love story. As the actor tells us the story from his grave, he projects a personality that is full of youthful angst and restlessness, sense of adventure, deep longing for a mother lost early in life, ambivalence towards his father and home. The story also gives us a glimpse of how people who are trying to make it and those who have already made it in Hollywood live their daily lives in a not so ordinary environment. So, there is a love story here, but as usual, Ted Guevara's work is never run of the mill. This is an artistic take on a segment of Dean's life.
I was gifted this book by the author. We struck up a casual conversation one day and to my surprise he said, "I like to write." I thought, "Okay? That's nice." But as we kept talking I knew he was serious. Mr. Guevara convinced me not by asking me to read, but by his passion for it. We talked about The Great Gatsby and other books we've both read. He vowed to bring me a copy of his latest book, "Lips of a Mastodon." And low and behold the next day he brought it in for me, signed and all. So I read it. And by God it was one of the best books I have read. Ted is a masterful artist with his words. Sometimes I had to go back and reread some paragraphs because I was so delighted with the wordplay. I am a Southern man by heart and have lived in his home state of Indiana for well over 2 years. And this book strikes home. I didn't know much about James Dean before reading this novel. But now I am sad to say that after going for a right in that bright red MG-TD of his. Speeding up and down the highways at light-speed. This book will give you whiplash, in a good way. You're almost there with Jimmie, pulling for him, fighting beside him, loving the character that has been portrayed. I rated this book 5 out of 5 and solemnly stand by that rating. Not because Ted is my friend, but because this is a damn good book. Grab a copy and you'll know what I mean.
I have always had a fascination with actors and particularly those of times past. I understand that fame comes with a price and the untold stories of struggle and love affairs are often quite touching and heartbreaking. Author Ted Bernal Guevara has done a fantastic job of bringing James Dean to life on the pages of his "Lips of a Mastodon", where he recounts Dean's love affair with Italian actress Pier Angeli in 1954. I found the story to be very well written and it gave me a feel for an actor and a time that I knew very little about. Great read. (The opinions given in this review are 100% my own and are unbiased.)
This book was written by a friend of James Dean. He treats the subject matter with love and care. It outlines the love affair of James Dean and Pier Angeli. He loved her and wanted to marry her but she was over protected by her mother and could not beak with her.

He was the boy from the wrong side of the track. She was a refined beauty. They could never had a future. I think she used him relentlessly then dropped him to marry Vic Damone.

His need for speed eventually killed him at a young age.

Lips of Mastodon is a story based on James Dean and the woman who captured his heart, Pier Angeli. I very much this enchanting romantic story of James Dean and actress Pier Angeli. The book was a fairly short book, but it would be a quick regardless because it pulls you in so quickly. I enjoy the old Hollywood style stories and Guevara was brilliant expressing each and every detail of this romance in that old Hollywood style as it should be. I felt as if I was there living in old Hollywood during the time of James Dean. He did a wonderful job of telling the true love story of James Dean and Pier Angeli. The story was intriguing, romantic and very well written. It not only covers the romance but also the ups and downs and adventures. I look forward to reading more from Guevara!
