This is my second JPBowie novel I have read and have thoroughly enjoyed. The action is believable,smooth-flowing;the dialogue makes me feel like I can almost hear them talking! The main characters of Nick and Eric are likeable, even though Nick has many demons in his past to deal with. There was a surprising twist this time with the psychiatrist, which I enjoyed and only added to this excellent suspense thriller.
Francisco Garcia is sooo bad; his gay son is sooo touching. This book was hard to put down because of the many unexpected and unpredictable moments. The many secondary characters only added to the story's attraction.

I am happy to recommend yet another J. P. Bowie novel. On this adventure, said author focuses on Nick Fallon, Private Investigator. Nick was already introduced in prior "Portrait" novels, but we get to know him much better this time around. As Nick's past catches up with him, his life and his lover Eric's are threatened, not to mention their relationship itself is challenged. I enjoyed all the suspense and a most satisfying ending. If you enjoyed the "Portrait" novels, you'll also love "A Deadly Game." Treat yourself to this "can't put it down" page turner. The fact that Bowie is prolific is wonderful news for fans like me. I can't wait for the next one!
My opinion only. Others seemed to have enjoyed this book.
This was sailing along nicely until the convicted murderer escaped and it went downhill from there. By the time he died it seemed like all the other characters were immature, inept idiots. It never got better.
Loved this book!!!
It's a pity there's not more stories about established relationships - and happy ones too! Not about the couples in need of consulting or with big problems, but just happy and loving, like Nick and Eric. I loved these two guys a great deal and I'm happy there's two more books about them and then I'm off to the Portrait series )
Since I'm a romance girl first and foremost, I liked, that the story focused on relationships stuff more, than an average thriller would, but I loved the detective part too. Oh and I loved Nick's dreams about Sam and Joseph - being together and happy. I felt so sorry for them and their tragic story, it was really comforting to know that somewhere in the other life they've got the happiness they deserved!
Life has been a rollercoaster ride of ups and downs, mostly downs for Nick Fallon. He lost his partner, his lover of ten years, in a stupid accident. Martin Keller was the best thing in Nick's life and now he was gone, forever. It was a devastating blow that Nick didn't think he'd ever recover from.
At the time of his loss Nick was a Detective with the Pittsburgh police department. His best friend on the force was Detective Sam Valance. They held a special bond as the only two gay cops in their precinct. A drug bust to nail a major crime boss, Francisco Garcia, goes horribly wrong, which only adds to Nick's feelings of desolation. Luckily for Nick, he is sent to a shrink. Dr. Norman Phelps manages to help Nick put everything in perspective.
Then Nick resigns, moves to New York, and his life takes an upward swing, especially after he meets paramedic Eric Jamieson. Together they decide to move to Laguna Beach, California. Nick gets a P.I. license and becomes business partners with friend Jeff Stevens, while Eric decides to work with Peter Brandon, Jeff's lover at his art gallery. Everything is falling into place for the couple until Nick hears that his old nemesis, Francisco Garcia, has escaped from Penn State Prison vowing vengeance on the cops that had anything to do with his arrest, including Nick. Fears for Eric's safety drive Nick crazy, but nobody believes Garcia would come all the way to Laguna Beach when he's a wanted felon. However, protecting his lover is all that matters to Nick. He can't lose Eric and survive the aftermath.
Intense, with a detailed plotline, A Deadly Game is a skillful blend of action, drama, and sensuality. Nick, Eric, and the large cast of characters fill this tale to the brim, yet each is memorable in their own way. While the balance of power - good vs. evil - rests in a plausible storyline, it goes on a bit too long which slows down the action. Having said that, I did thoroughly enjoy the suspense, angst, and mild sexuality in the story. A Deadly Game is a compelling, character driven tale of loss and love. Don't be surprised when the tears start falling.

A Deadly Game takes this story to Nick and Eric. Before Nick meets Eric he lived in Pittsburg and it tells us what happens to Nick before we see him in New York and his past catches up to him and Eric in California.
I really recommand this book since it helps to shed some light on Nick Fallon before we see him in the 'Portait' novels and how his and Eric's relationship continues to thrive.
I'm frustrated with you, Mr. Bowie! This novel (the first I've read from you) was both exciting and thrilling - not a mystery as much as a suspensful, edge-of-your seat read. My beef? I spent an afternoon reading the last 100 pages every chance I got because I couldn't put this (e)book down! Congrats on a fine suspenseful novel - I'm looking forward to reading more in this series...
Great read. Suspense. Just enough sexual content to add to the story but not take it over.
